Universal masterbatches

This term describes masterbatches that are not designed specifically for one polymer or another. They are designed to offer a satisfactory colour solution across a number of differing polymers. Their manufacture relies on a common carrier system.
PMB has developed the highly effective MX carrier which underlies the majority of its universal masterbatches.
Technical Aspects
- Allows higher pigment loadings in the masterbatch.
- Good hiding and opacity characteristics.
- Excellent colour distribution especially in large mouldings such as sheet applications.
- Greater potential to overcome some negative effects associated with the use of metallic and special effect pigments in some polymers.
Commercial Aspects
- Same masterbatch can be used in a range of polymers.
- Purchasing economies can be more easily achieved.
- Potentially higher pigment loadings in the masterbatch can facilitate lower let down rates.
Design Aspects
- Allows products to meet their colour requirements economically.
- Batch to batch consistency allows your product to appear in its true colours time after time.
- Some manufacturing and product issues associated with certain special effects can be more easily overcome.
- Same masterbatch can be used in a range of polymers.
Manufacturing Aspects
- Excellent colour distribution in final product.
- Optimised formulations - not over engineered.
- Lowest colouring cost per tonne.
- Volume breaks more easily exploited.
